Director's Typical Day

Today, as usual, Bob Forsyth and Willy Roe are out and about, in Tranent and Birmingham as it happens, meeting clients and facilitating events. In London, John Griffiths is desk-bound in the office: researching, writing, e-mailing and on the phone. No jacket and tie, so he isn't seeing any clients today. Yesterday was more formal. He had meetings with the VSNTO to discuss the Voluntary Sector Skills Strategy, commissioned by the Active Community Unit of the Home Office, and a trip to Lewisham Silwood Estate where we are evaluating the impact of a regeneration funded Community Safety programme.

In Edinburgh, Richard Scothorne has been awake since 6am because of the baby. He had an 8.30am breakfast in a café with Bob, to discuss a Scorecard proposal and the need to add another associate to the team. He is in for a busy day. This is his diary.

  • 09.30 Travel to Glasgow to discuss progress on a project. Project is going well. Consider how to present to the Management Board in three weeks time.
  • 11.45 Train back to Edinburgh in First Class to ensure some quiet laptop time. Design outline of workshop taking place next month. E-mail client with cover note asking for comments and checking details of the venue.
  • 12.35 Pick up a sandwich on way to office. Check e-mails and respond. Phone John in London about internal business. Unusually, he is out for lunch. Farringdon has some great local eateries and book shops.
Eat sandwich in meeting room with Tine, one of our Consultants, reviewing progress of a new web-based product.
  • 14.00 Ring client in Bristol about workshop I'm facilitating tomorrow. Check final details, attendance - any new developments I need to know? Client sending two additional documents.
Ring another client to discuss repeat of annual stakeholder survey. If we are to carry it out well, we need to start planning now! Agree to meet client later this week. Good news - they are coming to us!
  • 15.30 Fleeting visit home to hug baby and wife, collect change of clothes and head to airport.
  • 17.35 Catch John at the office before I have to turn off the mobile. Bristol flight leaves on time at 17.50. In the air, read papers for tomorrow and go over programme for the day.
  • 19.15 Taxi to hotel, check in. Take a good look at the room we are using tomorrow. Go out for a pizza and a lager and annotate the programme during the meal to get it firmly fixed in my mind.
  • 22.30 Bed. Italian Football on Sky. Sleep.
